Skype usage ahead of Vonage & Cablevision

According to a recent analysis done by Sandvine Inc., a broadband management company...

Calls using Skype Technologies SA account for nearly half of the VOIP minutes used (46.2 percent) and about 40 percent of the VOIP bandwidth used in North America.

That puts Skype usage ahead of Vonage Holdings Corp., Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC - message board), and other popular branded VOIP offerings.

I've been playing around with Skype for a few weeks and have found that it not only saves me money on quick voice chats over the Internet and incoming calls from landlines (via SkypeIn) - it's also super convenient!

This technology doesn't require me to do anything out of the ordinary other than keep my headset and mic handy while I'm working, and when a call comes in, I just click a button and begin gabbing away!

For those times you just can't be disturbed, you also get a FREE voicemail with your SkypeIn subscription (I'm paying about $4/month), or you can download SAM: a FREE Skype answering machine, even if you only use Skype for the FREE PC to PC calls without subscribing to SkypeIn.

** Actually, SAM is 'donationware' so please support the author and send him a few bucks if you find this tool useful!

You can also make calls to landlines with the SkypeOut option for about 2US cents per min!

The sound quality is great - it's like talking over your cell phone. Oh, and no ANNOYING 5-15 second delays to confuse the participating parties... where you'd say something, but when you don't hear a reply, you repeat what you've just said just in case the other person didn't hear... and as you're repeating it, you begin to hear the other person's reply to your first question..... LOL!

Download Skype for FREE... remember PC to PC calls are FREE! And send me your Skype Name so I can add you to my contact list!

I use skype daily and find it to be ok. International calls are awesomely cheap, but sometimes the quality is unusable - rarely, admittedly. I use Linux so I can't take advantage of the skypeV (video) beta. Dammit.

Hi geokker,

SkypeV sounds pretty cool... but as cool as it sounds, I prefer not seeing (or being seen) during a phone call. Sometimes I just don't want to go through the hassle of making myself 'presentable' - especially just to chat on the phone : ) (lazy slob, I know)
