E-mail vs. Carmen… A Serious Dilemma

Why is it that there are people I can send the longest of e-mails — filled with exclamation points (!!!!!!), ALL CAPS, and without having to alter ’spam words’ such as Free, Make Money, and Opt-In, without any problems (they receive it, reply to me, and I receive it)…

While others can’t receive even simple messages such as, “I have an account update for you,” no matter which e-mail address or online ticket system I send it from…

I’ve noticed a spike in this problem during the past few weeks.

Here’s a Scenario:

Gmail’s Feed Me

View your favorite RSS feeds right in Gmail as Clips along the top of your Gmail screen. Display clips from blogs, news sites and other online sources. Pick from the latest headlines, random popular feeds, or add any RSS/Atom feed you want.

Don’t forget to add my feed and Jason’s to your Web Clips!

Convert RSS to Email Newsletters Automatically

I’ve already added this to my blog… check it out on the right hand side of this page under “watch me”. Then subscribe to my blog notify list by entering your name and email addy!

With the rise in usage of blogging and RSS it’s important to enable visitors to get updates in the format they want. According to an October 2005 White Paper published by Yahoo, “Awareness of RSS is quite low among Internet users. 12% of users are aware of RSS, and 4% have knowingly used RSS.”

How do you get website updates to visitors who have no idea what RSS is?

Easy…

Use AWeber’s new integrated Feed Broadcaster to allow visitors to sign up for a traditional email newsletter on your blog or other website that uses RSS. The Feed Broadcaster will take your RSS content that is published thru your blog and automatically create an email newsletter sent to subscribers.

How Feed Broadcaster Works:

  • Add the website address for your RSS feed to Feed Broadcaster.

  • Select how many news/story items you would like to be in each newsletter broadcast.
  • Select a pre-designed fancy HTML template and click “Load Template”.
  • Edit the template that is loaded automatically or use as is.

Within one hour AWeber will automatically grab the available RSS content from your feed and queue that content as a new broadcast in review status. You can choose to send those broadcasts or delete them. From that point forward newsletter broadcasts would be sent out to any subscriber on the list automatically when a new story is detected.

Give your website visitors the choice to subscribe and receive your content in the format and method they want.

Over 9 Years And I’m Still Chicken

Do you have an ezine, newsletter, or any type of opting email list? Do you regularly broadcast to them (and I’m not talking about prewritten autoresponse messages)?

I’ve been in this business since August 1996. That’s quite a long time considering a year doing business online is equivalent to 5 years offline.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is that I have a confession to make… sending out a broadcast message to my subscribers totally scares the begeebers out of me.

Ironic being that my ezine is what started my online business in the first place… over nine years ago.

As a matter of fact, I just sent one early this morning… my usual “Carmen’s Journal” issue, and I still had to go through my neurotic routine of running the text through spell checkers and content analyzers, sending 15 test messages to myself, and finally making the sign of the cross and asking God to keep me from exploding into a full-blown anxiety attack.

Saying I’m frightened is an understatement.

What am I so afraid of? Well, several things…

An Interview With A Spammer

Mike, an average Joe-spammer, made an average of $40,000 per month sending spam to millions of inboxes between 1997 to 2000.

However, due to the ISP’s aggressive anti-spam filtering systems, he admits, “spamming just isn’t paying the bills like it used to… it’s no longer easy money. We are throwing in the towel”

But check out this statement:

If nobody was really interested in spam and never bought anything that was advertised to them, spam would go away. But people are interested in spam. As long as people buy things advertised in spam then people like me will send bulk e-mail. Are we really that different from so-called legitimate bulk e-mailers? I don’t think there is a whole lot of difference.

I find it interesting that spammers like Mike are losing money and giving up this “source of income” not as a result of of CAN-SPAM laws, or people who have been educated to fight and stay clear of spam… but because of one of the biggest annoyances to legitimate ezine publishers like myself… the ISP’s e-mail filtering system.

I have mixed feelings.

If Viral Marketing Worked This Quickly!

The bug’s been pretty active here the past few weeks…

Joshua caught a bug at school… leaving him with a stuffy nose and phlegmmy cough for a good week. Then Al caught it and he was as helpless as a big “man baby” can possibly be for another week… and I finally caught my share of the yuckies which I’ve been fighting off for the last couple of days. My Chloraseptic spray & jar of Vicks Vaporub are my bestest friends at the moment.

And then… yes, there’s an “and then”

We rushed off to the Emergency Room last night because Joshua had (picture this…) one hand on the coffee table and the other on the sofa while he lifted both legs up (like in gymnastics parallel bars)… when the hand on the table slipped and he bumped the back of his head (the part right behind his ear) on the table.

What our coffee table kinda looks like… very child unfriendly.
I just assumed my son was so above all the usual kid-accidents…

He started screaming and crying immediately (which I was told was a very good thing… but doesn’t make it any less frightening), got an ice pack on it and gave him some Tylenol for the pain right away… but I thought I felt a small indentation where he got bumped, so we practically teleported him to the ER. Thank God it was only a superficial wound and nothing was broken, nor were stitches needed…

We will resume our regularly scheduled program as soon as I’ve finished padding every piece of furniture in our home.
