My Coming Out Party

» Filed Under: Thinking Out Loud

I've been browsing through blogs by other Internet marketers, and, I have to confess... I don't try to fit in 'work' into every free moment I have during the day like most other marketers do. (You gotta have the desire and drive to work like that. Even I'm impressed.)

I'm not always keeping an eye out on the next seminar or workshop... nor do I fit 'work' in as I eat my lunch, while the kids take their naps, or in between commercial breaks. To be honest with you, as much as I love what I do, I prefer to spend my time away from the computer, NOT working on my business (gasp!).

Being able to spend most of my day playing Joshua is very important to me. After all, he'll be starting school before long, and I'll just kick myself if I couldn't spend this time with him. He's growing up so fast... I remember when we could just lay him on the bed, and not even worry that he'd roll over.

Now, my 3 year old is starting to read and write.

I've been happy with my abnormal 9:30 PM - 2:30 AM work hours, but, twice a week, those hours will be changing to 11:30 AM - 4:30 PM because my friend and I agreed to take turns kid-sitting four times a week. This will give Joshua a chance to play with children his age, and learn to be away from his mommy for a little while.

Works out great for me too, because on the two days he spends at my friend's house, I can focus on my work during the day... clients can finally contact me at (somewhat) normal business hours, and my husband and son will get my undivided attention that they deserve, when they come back home to me.

I really like it this way. My life doesn't revolve around my work, and I wouldn't want it to anyway. I work so I can have the life I've always wanted for myself and my family... and that's exactly how it is : )

It's good to know other marketers agree that a better marketer isn't necessarily a marketer who wants to work 24/7!

Taking the time to do personal things without guilt means you can give your 100% when you do put your mind into work!

Children grow up quickly, you've got to make the most of it while you can!

This was a GREAT post, Carmen! Although I am one that eats, sleeps and breathes my work (not intentionally - I'm just *that* excited about my current goals)... I also agree that there has to be LIFE outside of work.

I really enjoy the flexibility of my schedule, and all of the free time that I have to spend with my family... and often, in between all of my 'brainstorming sessions', the kids and I are playing Literati across the network here in the office :}

It's nice. And I wouldnt have it any other way... thanks for a great post!!

Hi Vero!

To be honest with you, I didn't mind working *all day*. But, as soon as I found out I was pregnant... I just had to get myself a non-work-related life - heh.

I totally agree with:

"Taking the time to do personal things without guilt means you can give your 100% when you do put your mind into work!"

In order for me to function properly, I need to keep that balance. Otherwise, it just feels like I'm going through the motions... not able to go about my day with a clear head (thinking of what I need to do with my son, as I work... or what work needs to get done, while I'm playing with Joshua.

Visit again!!

Hi Lynn : )

I don't believe you... you could NOT possibly have any free time, or a life outside of work. Not with everything you're doing. Nope, sorry. *lol*

Flexibility, time, and income. The beauty of owning your own Internet-based business! I'm so with you... I wouldn't have it any other way!

Thanks for writing, Lynn... and come back again soon, ya hear?

LOL - Oh, but I do!! ;)

I take care of my Grandmother (92yo), have a great time playing with the kids... and even date!

Long phone calls with friends, and with my sister... shopping and eating out... traveling - and watching the "Law & Order" marathon every Monday night!!

Honestly, I used to work A LOT more hours than I do now... but I still hit it at least half a day 7 days a week (so maybe 30-40 hours a week spread out).

But then, too, I am a single mother - so my work is our sole source of income. Still, I fit in lots of fun, reading and just plain old "down time" :)

I'm a former mkting mgr and I'm always thinking how to run my business. I think you also have other priorities, i.e the little cowboy, while I'm trying to get my business started.

I think my priorities will change ... I hope it does anyhow.
